Rowher Flat OHV Area — What to Expect
Rowher Flat is a hidden gem for LA riders — closer than Gorman, free to enter, and with a trail network that works for every skill level. Managed by Angeles National Forest, the area sits in the hills above Santa Clarita and offers some of the best accessible OHV terrain in Southern California. For first-time families especially, the no-fee entry and wide beginner fire roads make it the perfect introduction to off-road riding.
60+ Miles of Marked Trails
From wide, smooth beginner fire roads to the technical Silverking Trail and Mine OHV Trail — Rowher Flat has terrain for every skill level. Most beginner riders will be comfortable on the lower fire road network from the first trip.
No Staging Fees
Unlike many OHV parks, Rowher Flat charges no day-use or staging fee. Bring your vehicle, unload at the staging area, and ride. You just need a current California OHV Green Sticker on your vehicle.
Silverking Trail
A designated dirt bike-only single-track that's one of the most popular trails in the Santa Clarita OHV network. Intermediate-level terrain — great for riders who've mastered the fire roads and are ready for more challenge.
Mine OHV Trail
An intermediate multi-use trail with a mix of hardpack and loose dirt, moderate climbs, and good variety. A natural next step from the beginner fire road network — riders enjoy this one from their second or third trip onward.
Getting There
Santa Clarita, CA 91390. Access via Upper Placerita Canyon Road off Highway 14, or via the I-5 to Highway 14 north. Use the OnX Off-Road app for turn-by-turn trail navigation and the most current trail status.
Best Times to Visit
Spring and fall offer the best conditions. Summer can be very hot — bring extra water, start early in the morning, and have shade at the staging area. The area is typically dry year-round with minimal mud after rain.
Trails at Rowher Flat — By Skill Level
Rowher Flat's trail network is well-suited for mixed groups — beginners stay on the fire roads while more experienced riders push into the technical terrain. It's one of the few OHV areas near Los Angeles where a family with total beginners and experienced riders can all ride together without anyone being out of their depth.
Lower Fire Roads
Wide, flat, smooth hardpack. The best starting point for first-time riders — easy to control, low obstacles, and forgiving terrain that lets new riders build confidence quickly.
Staging Area Loops
Short, easy loops immediately around the staging area. Perfect for kids riding for the first time — parents can watch from the staging area while kids get comfortable on their new ATV or dirt bike.
Mine OHV Trail
A mixed hardpack and loose dirt trail with moderate climbs and varied terrain. A good confidence-builder for riders who've done a few fire road laps and are ready for more variety.
Upper Fire Road Network
More elevation change and longer distances than the lower fire roads. Good for riders building stamina and looking to explore more of the 60+ mile network over a full day.
Silverking Trail
Dirt bike-only designated single-track — technical terrain, narrow lines, and demanding sections that reward experienced riders. Not recommended for ATVs or beginners.
Steep Hill Climbs
Rowher Flat has several demanding hill climb sections for advanced riders looking for a physical challenge. Loose surface and steep grades — experienced riders only.
