The recreation permit is required for any visit to the Imperial Sand Dunes during sand season (October 1 through April 15). The pass applies to your tow vehicle or street-legal truck — not to the OHVs you unload and ride. Buy it in advance online to save money and skip the gate line on busy holiday weekends.

First Time at Glamis? What to Expect on the Sand

Glamis is open dune riding — no marked trails, no designated routes. That's both the appeal and the learning curve. Beginners who stay on the flat open areas and practice basic throttle and steering control will have a great first trip. The mistake most first-timers make is going too fast, too soon, toward the big bowls and steep climbs before they've gotten a feel for sand riding.

Sand riding is different from dirt trail riding. You need more throttle to keep momentum in soft sand. Your bike or ATV will feel heavier and less responsive than on hardpack. Start flat, get comfortable, then work your way toward the rolling terrain. The wide open space means there's no pressure to be anywhere specific — take your time and enjoy the experience.

Key landmarks for first-timers: Vendor Row is the main commercial area near the entrance — food, supplies, and help if you need it. The Ledge is a popular high point with stunning sunset views. Gecko Road provides access to the northern camping areas. Stay aware of other riders at the top of dune crests — always check what's on the other side before you crest a hill.

Frequently Asked Questions — Glamis Imperial Sand Dunes

Where is Glamis / Imperial Sand Dunes located?
The Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (Glamis) is located off Highway 78 between Brawley and Blythe in Southern California — approximately 3 to 3.5 hours from Los Angeles via the I-10 east. Enter via Vendor Row or Gecko Road off Highway 78. For maps and navigation visit isdpermits.net or the BLM El Centro Field Office. Call FE Motorsports at (323) 588-6634 for vehicle recommendations before your trip.
Do I need a pass to ride at Glamis?
Yes — during sand season (October 1 through April 15) a Glamis recreation permit is required and strictly enforced. Weekly passes cost $35 when purchased offsite in advance, or $50 at the gate. A season pass is $150. Purchasing offsite before your trip saves money and avoids long lines at the gate during holiday weekends. Visit isdpermits.net to purchase in advance. Call (323) 588-6634 for more info.
Is a safety flag required at Glamis?
Yes — a safety whip flag is required for all vehicles at the Imperial Sand Dunes. The flag must be red or orange and measure at least 6 inches by 12 inches, mounted on a whip mast. First-time visitors are frequently cited for missing or undersized flags — pick one up before your trip. Do not arrive at Glamis without a properly sized flag on your vehicle. Call FE Motorsports at (323) 588-6634 — we can advise on what to bring.
Is Glamis good for beginners and first-time families?
Glamis is suitable for beginners but requires more preparation than most OHV parks. Sand riding is different from dirt trail riding — it demands more throttle control and physical effort. The wide open terrain means there's plenty of room to practice, but steep dunes can surprise inexperienced riders. Beginners should stay on the flat open areas first and work up to the bowls and hills. Our youth ATVs and dirt bikes are fully assembled and California Green Sticker approved for Glamis. Call (323) 588-6634 for advice on the right vehicle for your family's first trip.
What size ATV or dirt bike should I bring to Glamis?
For youth riders on their first sand dune trip, the Vitacci Hawk 110cc ATV or Apollo Blazer 9 125cc are ideal starting points — automatic, with speed governor and remote kill switch for parent control. For dirt bikes, the Apollo DB-25 70cc automatic is the most popular first-time option. Adult riders can step up to the Pentora 200 EFI or Commander 200. All are available at FE Motorsports in Los Angeles — call (323) 588-6634 to confirm availability before your trip.
When is the best time to visit Glamis from Los Angeles?
The best time to ride Glamis is during sand season — October through April. Thanksgiving weekend, Christmas, and President's Day weekend are the biggest events of the year with tens of thousands of visitors. Summer visits are not recommended — desert temperatures near Glamis can exceed 110°F. If you're planning a holiday weekend trip from Los Angeles, FE Motorsports is open 7 days a week. Stop in the morning before your drive and pick up a fully assembled vehicle. Call (323) 588-6634.
Do I need a California Green Sticker to ride at Glamis?
Yes — all OHVs must display a current California OHV Green or Red Sticker at the Imperial Sand Dunes. As a licensed California dealer, FE Motorsports can confirm the sticker status of any specific vehicle before you purchase. Most youth ATVs and dirt bikes in our lineup carry the Green Sticker. Call (323) 588-6634.
