The Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area — commonly known as Pismo Beach — is one of the only places in California where you can legally ride ATVs and dirt bikes directly on the beach and into the coastal sand dunes. Ocean views, cool temperatures year-round, beach camping, and 1,100 acres of sandy terrain. Three hours north of Los Angeles on Highway 1 — one of the most unique OHV destinations in the state.
Pismo Beach OHV — What Makes It Unique
Pismo Beach is unlike any other OHV destination near Los Angeles. It's not just a sand dune park — it's a coastal experience. You load your ATV onto the beach via the Pier Avenue ramp, ride south along the surf, and enter the dunes where the beach meets the sand hills. Ocean breezes keep temperatures comfortable even in summer. Sunsets from the dune ridges over the Pacific are something most inland OHV parks simply can't match.
Ride on the Beach — Legally
One of the only places in California where ATVs, dirt bikes, and OHVs can legally ride directly on the beach. The OHV area begins at Post 2, about one mile south of the Pier Avenue beach ramp.
Cool Year-Round — No Summer Heat
Unlike desert OHV parks, Pismo stays cool all year thanks to the Pacific Ocean. Expect morning marine layer in summer and mild temperatures in winter — ideal for riding any season.
Camp Right on the Beach
Overnight camping directly on the sand is available at Oceano Dunes — one of the most memorable camping experiences in California. $10/day. Wake up next to your ATV with ocean views.
Family-Friendly Scale
At 1,100 acres, Oceano Dunes is more compact and manageable than Glamis. Less overwhelming for first-time families — plenty of room to ride without getting lost or pushed into terrain beyond your skill level.
Whip Flag Required
All vehicles in the dunes must display a whip flag. A $5/day vehicle access fee applies. All OHVs must have a current California OHV Green or Red Sticker. Come prepared — rangers enforce these rules.
3 Hours from Los Angeles
Take the US-101 north toward San Luis Obispo, exit at Pismo Beach, then follow Highway 1 south to Pier Avenue in Oceano. The beach ramp is the main OHV access point.

Terrain at Oceano Dunes — By Skill Level
Oceano Dunes works for a wide range of skill levels. The beach itself is flat and forgiving for beginners, while the dune interior offers increasingly challenging terrain as you move away from the shore.
The Beach Flat
The firm, flat beach area between Post 2 and the dune edge. Perfect for first-time riders to get comfortable before heading into the dunes. Wide open, low obstacles, forgiving terrain.
Lower Dune Faces
Gentle dune slopes close to the beach entry. Good stepping-stone terrain between the flat beach and the interior bowls. Manageable for youth ATVs and beginner dirt bike riders.
Bowl Area & Pismo Creek
The popular bowl area in the dune interior where most action happens. Riders circle the bowls, tackle moderate dune faces, and encounter a mix of other vehicles. Expect crowds on weekends.
Ridge Camp Views
A scenic high point in the dune interior with panoramic views of the Pacific. A worthy intermediate destination — the views from the ridge are a highlight of any Pismo trip.
Steep Dune Faces
The steeper interior dune faces reward experienced riders — soft sand, significant elevation, and drops that require proper technique and commitment. Know your skill level before attempting.
Arroyo Grande Creek Crossing
The creek crossing at the south end adds another dimension to the ride. Be aware of tide conditions — high tide or heavy surf can make this area more challenging and risky.

Best Time to Visit Pismo Beach from Los Angeles
Fall — September to November
Warm temps, less fog than summer, great dune conditions after early rain. The ideal Pismo trip window from LA — comfortable riding and smaller crowds before the holiday push.
Winter — December to February
Cool, clear days with great packed sand after storms. Low crowds outside of holiday weekends. The most serious riders favor winter conditions for optimal dune terrain.
Spring — March to May
Mild temperatures, wildflowers on the surrounding hills, less crowded than summer. Good conditions throughout — a solid long weekend option from Los Angeles.
Summer — June to August
Marine layer means overcast mornings most days at Pismo. Temperatures stay cool but visibility can be low. Crowds are highest. Riding is still great — just bring a layer and expect fog until mid-morning.
