Ocotillo Wells Landmarks — The Must-See Destinations
Ocotillo Wells has several iconic destinations that riders make a point of visiting on every trip. These geological formations and terrain features are what make Ocotillo Wells unlike any other OHV park in California.
The Pumpkin Patch
One of the most unique geological features in California — a field of globular sandstone concretions formed over thousands of years of wind and water erosion. The round, pumpkin-shaped formations protrude from the desert floor and are a popular family photo stop. Please preserve the formations — ride around, not over them.
Blowsand Hill
Perhaps the most popular destination in the park — a massive wind-formed sand dune illuminated by a ring of headlights on busy weekend nights. A challenging and iconic climb for riders of all skill levels. One of the most photographed spots in the entire SVRA.
Devil's Slide
A 200-foot-high granite and sand island — an ancient decomposing mountaintop that presents a serious challenge to OHV riders. Named for exactly the reason you'd expect. Experienced riders only.
Gas Domes
An unusual geological formation where natural gas seeps through the desert surface, creating dome-shaped ground formations. A fascinating and unusual stop that reminds you just how geologically active this desert region is.
Artesian Well
An abandoned 1919 oil drilling platform where geothermal water was discovered instead of oil. Now a popular historical landmark and stopping point for riders on their way across the park. A piece of California desert history.

Blowsand Hill
The park's iconic dune. A manageable challenge for intermediate riders with good throttle control. Very popular — expect crowds on weekends.
Rolling Desert Hills
Undulating terrain throughout the park with varying elevation changes. Good for riders who've mastered flat desert and want more variety.
Devil's Slide & Technical Canyons
Narrow technical canyons, rocky slopes, and the 200-foot Devil's Slide. Demanding terrain for experienced riders only.
Planning Your Ocotillo Wells Trip — What to Know
Ocotillo Wells is remote desert — the park itself has very limited facilities. Come prepared and you'll have an incredible trip. Come unprepared and you'll spend the day dealing with problems instead of riding.
Water: Ocotillo Wells has no water filling stations. Bring all drinking water before you arrive. Pay showers are available at the Ranger Station, Main Street, and Holmes Camp (quarters only — $0.50 per 2 minutes).
Camping: Free dispersed camping anywhere in the park for up to 30 days per calendar year. No reservations, no hookups, no dump station. Vault restrooms in the Quarry, Cove, Main Street, Holly Road, and Hidden Valley areas.
Best Season: October through May. Summer desert temperatures regularly exceed 110°F — plan a fall, winter, or spring trip from Los Angeles.
Green Sticker: All OHVs must have a current California OHV Green or Red Sticker. Rangers check regularly and will cite unregistered vehicles.
